It has been said that if you understand the history of New Kent County you will have learned much about the history of our country. Named for County Kent, England, New Kent was founded 120 years before America became America. It is where Captain John Smith met Pocahontas. It is where George Washington and Lafayette traveled through on their way to cornering Cornwallis at Yorktown. It is where a young George Washington met Martha and where President John Tyler met his wife, Letitia Christian.
